Greetings from the Cayo District

Hello from Belize! Our wonderful group arrived safely on the 5th of July and was whisked off to beautiful Clarissa Falls, a resort on the Mopan River.  The 6th was spent getting acquainted with fellow group members, and setting the stage for the weeks to come. Today, the 7th, the group visited Barton Creek Caves, a limestone cavern seven miles long.  The cavern is accessible only by canoe, as it was formed by the river which flows through it. Exploring the cave we saw amazing rock formations, several species of fish and bats, as well as ancient Mayan artifacts including pottery and ancient human remains.  During our canoe trip we paddled under our future home-stay community, El Progresso, which we will move to on Monday the 9th.  Tonight we are looking forward to tomorrow’s excursion; a nature hike during which we will learn about medicinal plants, and a visit to nearby Mayan ruins.

With a mix of getting to know the locals and playing more soccer in our free time.
