Sweet Bequia, oh so sweet!

Hello again! On

Friday, we took an hour long ferry to the island of Bequia and met our musically inclined driver named Brinsley, who then chauffeured us to our beautiful two story home overlooking the ocean. Once we all settled in, we walked down to the closest beach, Princess Margaret, swam in a cave near the beach and left before sun down to head home for dinner. Our chefs (Students) prepared a wonderful meal of lasagna and spinach salad with rice crispy treats for dessert.

We spent Saturday and Sunday getting to know the island, which included visiting the blowhole and hiking to the highest point in Bequia. Along with this we learned about the history of the island from Brinsley, who was born and raised on Bequia. Our next adventure was snorkeling around the local reefs, and getting to see all the amazing aquatic life up close and personal. When we returned home, our trip leaders told us to dress up while the cooked us dinners. They took us out of our rooms two by two, and while it had a horribly horror movie vibe at first we soon found what was waiting for store for us: Cafe Global Routes. Paired up with a partner, we all got to learn about another group member over a candlelit spaghetti dinner. While we began with a list of guided questions, once we got going we launched into sharing about what we loved, hated, missed, and who we were beyond this trip. It was amazing getting to learn so much more about another group member. The night didn’t end there: Flaco led salsa lessons and in our finest skirts we twirled the rest of the night away.

Monday was the first day of camp in Bequia. We arrived to the school at 9:00 am and started off the day with icebreakers, to get to know our new campers. Then we split into two groups: games/sports and arts and crafts.

After a long day of camp, we made a quick stop for supplies, headed home, relaxed a bit, and started an intense group activity of Iron Chef. We were all split into three groups: appetizers, main course, and dessert. We were all required to incorporate two ingredients, ginger and lime in each of our dishes. The appetizer group prepared chili cheese fries with ginger lime chutney mozzarella. The main course was comprised of Thai chicken with a lime ginger curry sauce. Finally, our dessert group prepared chocolate cake with ginger whipped cream and lime icing. The whole meal was delicious.

On Tuesday we walked to the school for our second day of camp Bequia. We started off with “The Awesome Song” and then split back into our two main groups. Games/Sports played “Simon Says” with the youngest campers and then played games like soccer followed by Elves, Wizards and Giants with the older campers. The Arts and Crafts group did face painting with the youngest campers and made glue and glitter paintings and bracelet making with the older campers. While we miss Lauders and our loving hosts there, Bequia is proving to be everything  we hoped for and more. Waking up to paradise every morning fills us with the energy and  excitement to tackle our new camp and any challenges that may emerge along our journey.

Goodbye for now; the next time you hear from us we’ll be back in the States. Here’s to new beginnings and our beautiful new home here in Bequia,

– your LIAs
