Costa Rica: Getting on the Map!

We can’t believe that it’s already the final week of our Costa Rica travelers’ time in Costa Rica! This past week – which was their last week in their homestay community – everyone was busy wrapping up their projects, enjoying time with their host families, playing plenty of soccer, and soaking up that Pura Vida spirit. Take a look!

First, we mixed and prepared the paint!

After the first layer of paint was dried, we had to map out a grid on the wall. We were supposed to get a projector, but like any service project, things didn’t work out as planned. The students put their adult pants on and went the hard route: grid mapping. Which is time consuming and tedious, but they did it! We want to give a special thanks to Jason for helping us with the math portion of this project. Go team, go!

The group took a trip to San Isidro to get paint for the countries, and there wasn’t a large selection. Fortunately, the kids saw this as a fun challenge and made their own “earth” tone colors (pun intented).

And then it all started! We intended to teach some of the local kids about geography, but quickly noticed that we were learning too.

Although Diana has been working primarly in on teaching English, she stepped in to help the map group!

Everyone lent a helping hand with the map project.

Arvin and Mya, casually trying to figure out the Middle East.

Almost done!

Finished World Map!

The (almost) finished community center addition.

Saying goodbye this to all the host families and community members.

Rain, fog or shine, our sports group dedicated themselves to their project and showed up. Here they are, getting the group organized and ready for fun.

When in Costa Rica, play soccer!

And more soccer…

And just when you think you’ve played enough, play more.

The kids never wanted to stop playing. This was truly a great experience for everyone!

We’d like to give a special thanks to Catalina and her father for donating these sweet jerseys. The local kids went bananas over them!

This week, our travelers will get to indulge in some final travel excursions! First, they’ll be surfing in a town called Uvita, and soon they’ll get to do some whitewater rafting, too! Keep an eye out for updates on those activities, and our group’s final reflections on their time in Costa Rica.
